Clearing a mezzanine level

Work on the upper level as its own room, even though it is open to the space below.

  1. Strip and bag soft goods.Remove bedding, pillows, mattress protectors, throws and any curtains or fabric panels used as privacy screens. Launder what can be washed; bag the rest to evaluate later.
  2. Evaluate the mattress honestly.A mattress that has sat in smoky air for years is a large, deep sponge. Encasing it can help with light odor, but heavily affected mattresses are often replaced rather than treated.
  3. Clean the structure.Wipe the railing, guard panels, stairs or ladder, built-in shelves and the underside of the ceiling directly above the bed. These are within easy reach from the platform, so there is no excuse to skip them.
  4. Address the floor of the mezzanine.Carpet or rugs on the platform collect settled residue. Wood decking may need cleaning in the gaps between boards, where dust and film collect.
  5. Improve air movement.A ceiling fan or a small fan pushing air down from the platform reduces the warm, stagnant pocket where odor builds up.

Why mezzanines are a recurring problem in converted warehouses

When old warehouses with very high ceilings were turned into lofts, many units gained a partial second level: a platform reached by a steel stair or a ladder, often with a glass or cable railing, sometimes tucked into a corner beside large windows. These spaces were designed to make use of the height, and they work well for sleeping or an office. They also sit in the hottest part of the room, close to the ceiling, with limited ventilation and often no supply vent of their own.

Smoke from the main floor rises, spreads along the ceiling and settles on everything at that level. Since the platform is usually furnished with a bed, rugs and fabric, there is a lot of soft material to absorb it. And because sleeping areas are usually kept dark and closed off with curtains, they get less air movement during the day.

Even after the main floor is cleaned and a whole-space treatment is done, a mezzanine with the original mattress and curtains will keep smelling. Treat the soft goods on the upper level as a separate decision, not as part of the general cleaning.
